Executive Summary
Professor Mhd Ikhwanuddin is a leading expert in aquaculture in Malaysia. He currently serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). From 2018 to 2025, he was appointed Director of the Institute of Tropical Aquaculture and Fisheries (AKUATROP), which has been recognized as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education. As the founding Director of this HICoE, Professor Ikhwanuddin successfully positioned AKUATROP as Malaysia’s premier institution advancing food security through aquaculture. With more than three decades of dedicated research in crustacean biology, reproduction, fisheries, and aquaculture, Professor Ikhwanuddin has established himself as a prominent authority in his field. His expertise focuses on the fisheries and aquaculture of commercially valuable crustacean species, including mud crabs, blue swimming crabs, marine shrimp, and giant freshwater prawns. Internationally recognized for his pioneering work in mud crab breeding and culture, he has spearheaded over 110 projects at national, international, and industry levels, including more than 50 international grants, securing total funding exceeding RM20 million. His scholarly contributions include over 320 peer-reviewed publications, 17 books, 13 book chapters, and 7 policy papers. As a mentor, Professor Ikhwanuddin has supervised and graduated 19 PhD and 27 MSc students as the Main Supervisor, contributing significantly to the growth of aquaculture science and capacity building in the region. Since 2021, he has consistently ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in Fisheries for five consecutive years, according to the Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists database.
