Executive Summary
Prof. Wan Iryani Wan Ismail is a Professor at the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. She holds a PhD in Chemical Pathology (Pharmaceutical Biotechnology) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her research focuses on assessing the quality and authenticity of honey and various herbs using physicochemical and phytochemical analyses, followed by investigations into their effects on insulin resistance-related disease models. Her team addresses major diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, wounds, and neurodegenerative disorders. Prof. Ismail has been appointed by the Department of Standards Malaysia as Chairperson for two working groups tasked with developing the Malaysian Standards for honey harvested from honey bees and stingless bees, respectively. These initiatives aim to help consumers access pure honey and reduce the prevalence of counterfeit honey in the market. They also support honey producers and beekeepers in producing pure, high-quality honey. Additionally, she was appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture to lead the committee for a 10-year strategic plan for modernizing beekeeping practices, which is shifting from traditional methods to more sustainable, modern approaches, while enhancing the socio-economic impact for beekeepers. At the international level, Prof. Ismail serves as the Malaysian representative for ISO Global, which develops various standards related to honey, other bee products, and beekeeping. She has secured numerous national, international, and industrial research grants totaling approximately RM10 million. Through collaborations with various agencies, Prof. Ismail has developed numerous innovative products especially Honey Beads (edible honey packaging for travel), Bee Ready¿¿ energy bars made from discarded bee bread to increase its commercial value and many more. She also contributed to the development of the KIIS IoT application by SIRIM, which enhances the effectiveness of monitoring beekeeping practices. These products have received multiple local and international awards. Furthermore, she works with industry partners to commercialize honey-based research products. Currently, she serves as an advisor and consultant to several agencies and companies, including FELDA, Koperasi Usaha Anak Felda (KUAF), MIMOS, Dr. Ridz Marketing Sdn. Bhd., Bioinnovsphere Labs Enterprise, and others. In terms of publications, Prof. Wan has authored nearly 150 works, including high-impact journal articles (WOS, Scopus), academic books, book chapters, popular science books, policy papers, technical reports, and articles in newspapers and magazines. In recognition of her significant contributions to research and innovation benefiting both the community and the nation, she was listed among the Top 2% of Scientists in the World by Stanford University in 2022, 2023 and 2024, named Asia¿¿¿s Rising Scientist, and featured in the Top 100 Asian Scientists by Asian Scientist Magazine in 2020 and 2022. She was also awarded the L¿¿¿Or¿¿al-UNESCO Fellowship for Women in Science (FWIS) in 2019.
